On LS1 (99 camaro ss to be exact), which radiator neck is input and which one is output?
One lower neck is by the heater core necks, the upper one is by the throttle body(before turning intake manifold 180 deg).
I am reading on google conflicting information. I am sure you guys would know.

For several reasons, flow should be against gravity; in at the bottom, out at the top.

On some of the LS1's both in and out are at the same elevation.

Jim,
This is not my photo, but I have exactly same waterpump positioned exactly this same. Maybe different LS engines have different water pumps.
You can definattely see one neck is higher than the other.
Any ideas?

The outlet should be the higher one due to gravity and thermal expansion (which in this case is the same thing).

It does make sense but the thermostat is on the return/lower rad hose in the photo.

It's true, the thermostat is usually in the block outlet. Does it matter where it is? Its purpose is to restrict water flow and it can do that no matter where it is located in the line of water flow. It is not dependent on a delta T factor or convective flow.
However, it should be designed to allow for its location.

So to summarize. The lower neck where the thermostat is, that is return (input) neck and the top/higher neck is water output?

Nope!
Here we go. 20 year GM auto mechanic. The fitting with the thermostat is the outlet (lower fitting). Thus, the inlet is the higher fitting. The outlet fitting connects to the RH side of the radiator using a 9" hose. This end tank has the radiator cap. The inlet fitting on the top of the engine connects to the LH tank on the radiator using a longer hose (19") with a spring inside. As always, right hand and left hand as looking from the drivers seat. My $.02. |

Without ever seeing one in person I am tending to believe Lambeiro due the the casting shape of the water pump housing. The water pump turns clockwise so that would make the inlet the upper port in the above picture.

The LS water pump actually turns counter clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine. It runs on the back side of the serpentine belt which makes it run opposite from the engine rotation. I am pretty sure that the upper hose connection is the outlet to the radiator.
