Hi:
Have any of you had to install CATS in your exhaust system to meet State requirements?
Do you have pics of them?
If you did not, how did you overcome the requirements?

I had a conversation with someone experienced in kit building on this;
he recommended installing one on each bank right after the headers/manifold for 2 reasons.
By the nature of their construction, cats take away a lot of the sharp "bark" of a pushrod SBC, which would otherwise make it very obvious that it's not a Lambo V12. And consider the reduction of harmful pollutants.
If you get large diameter ones, (3"), the performance loss is insignificant.

Hi:
Man, you must be using "stealth cats" I can barely make out where they are. What model and source did you get them from?
I found some generic CatCo 2.5" cats but no flanges.

Be careful buying generic Cats, OEM ones will be more expensive, but If you pick up one that was originally designed for an OEM application using your engine, it will flow much better and give you better performance.
In the catalyst industry, any parts that are to plugged up or damaged to be sold to the OEMs are labeled "racing" or "aftermarket".
The OEMs spend between 15000-20000 hours on a dyno for each and every application tuning the converters. |

Hi:
Thanks for the input.
The Cat would be a CATCO HiFlow type with 2.5" IN / OUT pipes.
Hopefully Saturday we can get a ruling on this puppy.
I have reviewed sever 25 page State Statute documents to try and determine what is required.
Evidently 20 years of Perry Mason and Hill Street Blues has not paid off.
Maybe I should have watched Barnaby Jones..........

dB,
Share what you find. I am going to be doing the same research in a few months. CA requirements are a killer. Would like to know how yours turns out. What state are you in? |

Hi:
You bet I will.
Right now I am in the state of confusion!
All the stuff I bought for the front of the engine does not appear to fit.
The Muffler guy is coming tomorrow and the "authorities" to review exhaust and hopefully have NO CATS. I think we should probably plan on it being there.
My goal was to have a running motor, exhaust and axles in 3 weeks.
Right now.........
Welcome to the builders reality.........NEXT!

Hi Shaddoe:
Do you have a source and P/N for the 12" CATS?
The CATCO Hi Flo I found were 14" long, 6.125" wide, and 4" high.
They are 2.5" IN/OUT and have no mounting flanges.

Hi Guys:
Thanks for the info.
The inspector guys here did not show up as scheduled today.
I did find a Dual IN and Dual OUT CAT that may be of interst.
I will try to get the specs on it tomorrow.
